We believe that Dale Street School needs to stay where it is, and not move across town to a more remote location next to Wheelock School.
Why?
It's the least expensive option when ALL costs and revenue are factored in, including field replacements, extra parking, Dale abandonment expenses, and MSBA reimbursement.
It's also the least disruptive to two neighborhoods and the town overall.
Many Dale Street-area residents want the school to remain, while Wheelock-area residents don't want a second school on that site.
It will be costly to implement all of the traffic and safety mitigation steps necessary to keep pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers from harm. Currently, no sidewalks exist on Cross and Philip Streets putting children who want to walk or bike at risk.
Most importantly, Dale St. continues to be the best location developmentally for 4th and 5th graders who are becoming critical thinkers, want access to the world around them, and are growing increasing independent and social. A downtown location for Dale Street School has provided a rich educational experience for 9-, 10- and 11-year-olds for decades. Our awards, ratings and test scores reflect success, and the students themselves say the Dale experience was great for them. We know many educators agree.
